STATEMENT: Rod Baldwin

My initial approach to painting as an absolute newcomer to the process, was to attempt to exactly reproduce landscapes from photographs or calendar illustrations. As I realised that I was attempting something beyond my skill level I accepted that exact reproduction should not be my aim; instead to ‘interpret’ the scene or adapt it into some sort of abstraction based only loosely on the illustrations being addressed. I then, in turn, adapted the abstraction into something concrete, not necessarily anything to do with the original. For example, did I see a face or a figure in the abstraction, and could I work on that to bring it out as a feature of the painting?
