Rachel graduated with a Bachelor of Education from the University of Auckland in 1994 majoring in education and Japanese. She then spent three years teaching and studying in Japan. On her return to New Zealand she taught Japanese language at several Auckland secondary schools.
Rachel then worked as an Air New Zealand international flight attendant for twelve years, expanding her translation and customer service skills. During this period she also gained a Certificate in Children’s Literature from the University of Canterbury, attended Robert Campion’s oil painting classes and participated in the Volunteer Stroke Scheme for the Waitemata District Health Board.
In 2013, having decided to pursue her love of art, Rachel enrolled in the Bachelor of Visual Arts degree at AUT. Majoring in painting, she graduated with a BVA in 2016. Rachel has one of her works in the Wallace Arts Trust Collection. She also exhibited in the 100 Days Project at Thievery Studios in 2017.
Rachel is passionate about swimming and the subject of water. These themes are reflected in her artwork. She sings with Auckland Choral, attends poetry classes and is an avid reader, particularly of graphic novels.
Rachel was a volunteer for Mapura Studios in 2017 before taking on the part-time role of studio assistant in 2018.
