An open studio art group for young people of all abilities and ages;  particular provision is made for those with autism and other special needs. The arts therapist and facilitators work to progress art making abilities, and to extend group-held, collective themes of interest on which to base subject matter for creative projects. A safe environment is provided for youths to form supportive relationships with one another – and to share and explore their creative ideas. These sessions run on a weekly basis during term time and are ongoing.

Allowing young people to express themselves creatively can increase self-esteem, confidence, positive self-identity, effective self-expression, artistic/fine motor skills, task engagement, sensory regulation, and imaginative thinking.  Belonging to a supportive social group can also encourage the development of communication and social skills, and be lots of fun! This programme will provide a safe and supportive environment, specifically tailored to the individual needs and abilities of each person in the group.

One student describes it as her happy place, and another’s parent says her son has been given the near-impossible gift of “belonging” to a peer group and a safe place.
