Māpura: on the outside, but you are welcome!
August 25th until September 18 2017
Waiheke Community Art Gallery, 2 Korora Rd, Oneroa, Waiheke Island 1081
The ideas of many of our artists are outside the orthodox channels of thought which allows their work to reach formal solutions that are challenging and unique. We have a highly qualified team dedicated to realising each artist’s ideas, and value work of low resolution that is driven by energy and strong ideas as much as the more technically accomplished work. As a result there is incredible diversity in the range and nature of the work. We see this diversity as a model for a normal, healthy social and intellectual environment yet find that our artists are often separated, by their difference, from the wider community. We would like artists and people who are interested in art from the community to join us in the studio but a lot of people seem to automatically feel they can’t. Serious exhibition spaces don’t tend to consider the work of our artists outside the rubric of ‘disability’ or ‘community’ art. The wider community starts to appear instinctively censorial and generic. Ironically Outsider Art is developing as an effective moniker to freight ideas into the mainstream with.
Our exhibition programme is one way we can connect our artists to the community, and provide a platform for the individualist mode of expression that carries their ideas. We invite you to look, and to look again. And enjoy the experience of seeing the artwork as much as the artist enjoyed the making, as much as we enjoy working in the studio with the artists of Māpura.
